Climate doom, AI doom, War doom... The Nasty Woman summary of the latest dooms coming soon to theaters near you!
One of the negative sides of being a Nasty Woman only by hobby is that I don’t have all the time I would like for writing. Articles don’t get finished, and news gallops on; the world keeps belching out more and more posts that I don’t have the time to read, much less comment on or write about. But I’m a mortal, and as such, I have to work. I’m also one of the Happy Slaves I wrote about (I made a Happy Slave song, but still didn’t have the time to properly post it here).
Anyway, just to say, I’m busy. With piano recitals for my students, poetry book readings, radio shows produced for free as a volunteer in the local radio… All labors of love, but as fully demanding as any full-time job.
In any case, I’ve been collecting snippets of doom for you to keep a wide view of what’s going on in the world. It’s difficult not to get lost in the entertainment of it all. Who can resist the spat between Trump and Musk? Isn’t that entertaining? And it’s everywhere! By the way, Elon was on drugs the whole time, they say. So if they gutted your social security, or the cuts to USAID left millions of people dead because of lack of treatment and medicines, blame it on ketamine! Our boy was on the clouds.
But there are other things going on, you know, such as, ehhhhh, climate change? Even if we look away from it, temperatures keep rising, as do sea levels, and nobody seems to care. Extinction? Uh? Shut up! I don’t want to miss the last episode on X!
The trend seems to be: you are not in control of your life or your future. The Dark Lords are. Christian Nationalist Zionist Rapture believers praying for Armageddon, AI lords, the law of the strongest.
So, here they are, for your entertainment, the Snippets of Doom by The Nasty Woman. Enjoy them with a good bottle of wine and some drugs, if you have them handy. The snippets are better consumed in a numb state. Hey, dude! Pass me the bong!
1. CLIMATE DOOM: I choose this first because it seems relegated to the oblivion with all that’s going on, the little square in the corner almost invisible in the newspapers. We don’t hear about it at all in the mainstream news, but, as far as I know and the last time I checked, it’s still happening. Like, what about the huge fires in Canada, with their smoke already reaching Europe? Early start of the fire season!
“WILDFIRE EMERGENCY: Wildfires in Canada have forced thousands of people to flee their homes, CBC News reported. The government of Manitoba declared a state of emergency after evacuating 17,000 people, and neighboring province Saskatchewan followed suit a day later, CBC News said. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said the prevalence of fire in “every region” was a “sign of a changing climate that we are going to have to adapt to,” according to Le Monde. BBC News noted that “scientists have linked worsening wildfire seasons to climate change.”

But the one that really got me thinking about writing these snippets was this one:
The 136 Largest Coastal Cities, including Egypt’s Alexandria, face $1 Trillion Losses per Year from Sea Level Rise by 2050, by Juan Cole:
“In a new paper, Chris R. Stokes et al. write in Communications Earth and Environment that even if we manage only to heat up the earth 1.5º C. (2.7º F.) above pre-industrial norms, that might be enough to provoke massive melting of the world’s principal ice sheets — those in Greenland, East Antarctica and West Antarctica.
“The previous academic consensus was that it would take an increase of 3º C.(5.4º F.) to melt them. But Stokes and colleagues find that the ice sheets are more vulnerable to global heating than had been previously thought. They write,
“Here we synthesise multiple lines of evidence to show that +1.5 °C is too high and that even current climate forcing [temperature increase] (+1.2 °C), if sustained, is likely to generate several metres [yards] of sea-level rise over the coming centuries, causing extensive loss and damage to coastal populations and challenging the implementation of adaptation measures.
“Since at the moment the world is on a trajectory that will certainly shoot past 1.5º C., and probably will take us close to 3º C. by the end of the century, these findings are very bad news. Because when the ice sheets melt, the water goes into the oceans and causes them to rise. In addition, the world’s glaciers are also melting, and this surface ice is also contributing to rising sea levels. Finally, warmer water expands to fill more volume, which also contributes to sea level rise, and the oceans are heating up rapidly.”
It’s always for egotistical and selfish reasons, of course; I’m human. I live in The Netherlands, a land that, as its name says, Netherlands means literally "Low Lands," lies below sea level until the city of Utrecht, which is in the middle of the land. The area where I live is around 4 meters below sea level. The lowest area is around the city of Gouda, which is 6 meters below sea level. And on top of that, it’s sinking!
The issue with being so low is not only the dangers of sea level rising and the idea that the sea will come in and flood half of the country. It’s not only water coming from the sea, but also the rivers. This is a delta, an area where several rivers confluence and flow to the sea. The Rhine River is one of the most famous, the Maas, but you can see here, there are many others. The Vliet passes by close to my house. And for some reason that I will have to research more, the river lies higher than the land around it. So, if the river overflows, the water will roll down like a big tsunami to the fields and the houses around it. And what is the Dutch government doing about it? Ehhhhhhhhhhhh…. Bickering? We don’t have a government, again. If you didn’t read the news, the Dutch cabinet fell last Tuesday because of issues on immigration and asylum seekers. Even though asylum seekers make up “around 10 percent of net migration to the Netherlands, even if there is an association between housing shortage and migration, it is more related to other migrant categories, such as expats, foreign students, and labor migrants, which most of the coalition partners are less keen to reduce in volume.”
Well, I think that Wilders might be betting on Trump’s support to win next time as part of his axis of right-wing partners in Europe. He wants a vassal Europe, full of little Wilders and Orbans who will bow to his command, yes-sir men.
Anyway, I’m going off topic. There are other climate-related news that also affect The Netherlands and other countries, such as water shortage, which is and will be made worse by the installation of huge data centers all over Europe and the world. If you didn’t know, data centers are thirsty bastards.
Below there is a section on War Doom, but this one is a combination of both: What about all those bombs being thrown in Gaza and their Carbon footprint?
Also, a recent research article (still not peer-reviewed) confirms that “Global Warming has Accelerated Significantly”: “The resulting adjusted data10 show that after 2015, global temperature rose significantly faster than in any11 previous 10-year period since 1945.”

2. AI DOOM: This one is BIG lately. Several interviews and articles have been written about this, one especially, an interview with a former OpenAI researcher who wrote a paper called AI 2027 where he basically says that by then AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) will be born, an intelligence superior to that of humans, and in his scenario, the one where there are no regulations, AI decides that we humans are unnecessary to their goals and it wipes us all out with a bioweapon. Kaboom! The End. Here is the interview, worth watching in full:
But also, if AI doesn’t kill us, it will generate more inequality, according to that interview too. And what are our leaders doing about that? Mmmmm….. getting on the money train that AI will generate, I think. Not regulating it, that is for sure.
This one is more recent and more ominous:
In that interview, at around 3:45, Beth Barnes, the director of Meta, says that AI is the highest mortality risk for humans, for her generation. “I’m an expert, I tell you, and you should freak out.”
It’s based on an article that appeared in the Wall Street Journal, which points out that “Models rewrite code to avoid being shut down. That’s why ‘alignment’ is a matter of such urgency.”
CNN reports that “Researchers are warning artificial intelligence has evolved. They say some AI models have become self-aware and are rewriting their own code. Some are even blackmailing their human creators to preserve themselves.” So, the AI Apocalypse doesn't seem so surreal after all?
“Artificial intelligence could be staging a real-life revolt.” Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called “Godfather of AI,” previously warned that the technology will get smarter and could get out of control.
Here is the full interview on CBS Mornings:
“It knows how to program, so it will figure out ways of getting around restrictions we put on it,” Hinton, the artificial intelligence pioneer, suggested. “It will figure out ways of manipulating people to do what it wants.”
“Now, industry experts suggest that may be happening much sooner than expected, triggering warnings of “catastrophic” national security risks, a potentially “extinction level threat to the human species,” or at the very least, massive job disruptions.”
And, last but not least, what about Palantir, Peter Thiel’s company, taking over all our data and compiling it in a comprehensive list, which could be used to spy on us, control us, limit us, expel us, imprison us, disappear us, or whatever the leader in power will want to do with it?

3. (NUCLEAR) WAR DOOM and IDIOT LEADERS DOOM:
I put these two together because who starts and continues wars? The people or the leaders in charge of government? Most of the time, the latter. But it gets worse when, on top of a volatile and very charged world, as it is now, you get idiot leaders in command. Like, what about the Ukrainians bombing Russian bombers while the Commander in Chief, Trump, is distracted bombing Musk online? Who was behind that attack? I read today that the US might be behind it, but not Trump, and that the UK’s MI6 and the Mossad might be behind it too. And that now Russia is at war with the UK, and by association, NATO, and Stammer doesn’t seem to know either.
And this essay by Chris Hedges about our leaders compared with the last Roman emperors, when the empire started to fall, is worth reading in full here:
“In the last days of all empires the idiots take over. They mirror the collective stupidity of a civilization that has detached itself from reality.”
This article also makes me think about the Clowns dominating Dutch politics at this moment. For the last four years, no cabinet lasted more than, what, 18 months, maybe a bit more? And what about actually governing? Nothing gets done. We’re dealing with a stikstof (nitrogen) crisis, housing crisis, water crisis, and immigration crisis, real or invented, health crisis, education crisis, but what have they solved? Nothing.
And what can I say about Israel and its inhumane war in Gaza that I have not said? That is by far, by millions of light-years distance, the worst of all inhumane actions going on today. Live-streamed genocide. Unbelievable, but true, and proof that the world is going to shit because the leaders have decided that pure brutality is okay now. Human rights were just a temporary joke.
At least there is a bit of hope in the younger generation. The brave Greta and crew are going by boat to deliver help in Gaza if they are not bombed in international waters by Israel, as happened to another humanitarian help boat.
“We are doing this because, no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying,” Thunberg said during a press conference ahead of the voyage.
“Because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity,” she continued. “And no matter how dangerous this mission is, it’s not even near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the live-streamed genocide.”
In the good news side, yesterday in Rome, 300.000 people marched for Gaza, against Israel’s war. Yes!
For that, I will leave you with Jessica Wildfire. She writes a newsletter, The Sentinel-Intelligence, also in Substack, which a few months ago was called OkDoomer. I find that title more engaging, by the way.
She calls herself a prepper; others call her Doomer, and she’s very much into pandemics and Covid, talking about masks and all that, but she’s good at finding possible pandemic risks. The next one coming: Bird Flu.
“A new study reported by the CDC shows H5N1 bird flu has developed the ability to spread through the air. In other words, it’s officially airborne.
“The study focused on transmission in ferrets, and it noted that this strain “displayed reduced virulence… compared with another H5N1 virus isolated from a dairy farm worker in Texas.” As histories of the 1918 pandemic have shown, it doesn’t matter whether a novel virus looks “mild” at first, because it can undergo a process called passage and become more deadly as it evolves“.
So, the bird flu has become airborne, which makes it easier to spread. In the US there are several documented cases of dairy workers catching bird flu from cows. It’s not a pandemic yet, but get your masks ready, just in case.
